Silicone doll repair primer
Hi,
in this post I am collecting basic information for silicone doll repairs.
Please note that the materials mentioned below are only suitable for silicone dolls and not for TPE dolls.
For any doll surgery, you will need a couple of accessories:
- a scalpel for cutting,
- a solvent like ethanol, propylene or propanone,
- a one-component silicone glue like Sil-Poxy,
- some ears rods to take off excess glue,
- something with a small tip like toothpicks or a small spatula, and.
- some cling film to push incisions together.
For more complex surgeries, e.g. if there was material loss, you might also need:
- a two-component platinum-cured silicone like Smooth-on's Dragon Skin, Ecoflex, or Platsil; and
- color pigments like Silc-pig to match the skin color of your doll.
For eye lashes and finger nails, which will occasionally come off, you can use:
- silicone glue (won't hold very tight),
- regular crazy glue (cyanoacrylate; will cure as a hard, non-elastic matter), or
- (preferably) Loctite 406; the latter is a multi-purpose adhesive with usually good results for bonding plastic with silicone.
The solvent serves for several purposes; it is used to clean the operating area from fat and grease, and it takes off excess glue before it has been cured. The following solvents are commonly used:
- Isopropyl alcohol,
- ethanol (= ethyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol),
- propanone (= acetone).
I'm not a big friend of acetone as it's rather aggressive and tends to corrode certain soft silicone blends, including Smooth-on's Dragon Skin and Ecoflex. However, the use of acetone seems to be safe on harder silicones like Doll Sweet used before 2015, so the choice is yours. Personally, I prefer to work with isopropyl alcohol.
Regarding silicone glue, you usually do not need a specific repair kit. That's one of the major advantages of most silicone dolls – you can use generic materials.
Even the most basic silicone glue works an almost all platinum-cured silicones. Basically any one-component silicone glue will work, differences are mosty how the cured silicone feels (softer or harder, more flexible or more rigid etc) and how strong it bonds.
Commonly used silicone glues for doll repairs are Permatex flowable windshield sealer, Sil-Poxy by Smooth-on, and E4 by Wacker Chemie.
The Permatex stuff is very popular in the UK and available at car repair shops, the E4 is made in Germany, and Smooth-on products are available worldwide.
